I went to your Ann Arbor store with my daughter (she goes to school here) for groceries. A man, Charles M. greeted us at the door with a paper in hand...we refused the store circular. We were there for about an hour. At the checkout counter a clerk had to assist me because I accidentally left my wallet in the car. I had to run out and come right back in. Charles M. Was still at the same door and I noticed him again. I completed two transactions (almost $***) and went to exit the store with a small cart with about * bags and a Calico Critters box on the bottom. It was cumbersome and we struggled to even check it out at the counter. Upon exiting, we were asked to show proof of purchase. At first, I didn’t think anything of it...but I noticed other customers with large (full) baskets in front of us and behind...passing us and leaving the store. Moreover, I told him that the clerk assisted us with the check out process. When I asked him why he stopped us he said that it we had a large box. I was shaken by his statement because we were only a few feet from the checkout area. Furthermore, we were two of three African American customers (that I saw) in the store AND were the only ones stopped at the door. **I need an answer to this blatant act of humiliation at your store. I spent almost $*** and was treated like I stole something while other customers (white) were not questioned. **I did reach out to the store and was shown compassion by one of the store clerks (she was also African American), however, when I was transferred to the manager, Mary, I was not given the same type of consideration. She said that her employee probably didn’t see me and wanted to make sure that I paid for the items in my cart. Her attitude was unapologetic and less than favorable. My daughter was able to capture part of the conversation as a recording. **I will be posting my situation on social media. This experience was something that I don’t often face...but today rubbed me the wrong way. **Please respond.
