The Tampa Bay Rays were established as a Major League Baseball (MLB) team on March 9, 1995. The team was originally called the Tampa Bay Devil Rays until 2008 when they dropped the "Devil" from their name. Tampa Bay became the 13th Major League franchise in Florida and the first MLB team to represent the Tampa Bay area. The team's creation was a result of an expansion effort by MLB to include two new teams. The Rays played their inaugural season in 1998 and have since become an integral part of the Tampa Bay community, gaining a dedicated fan base and achieving significant success in the sport.
