What is the difference between sterling silver and silver-plated items?

Asked 6 months ago
Sterling silver and silver-plated items differ in composition and quality. Sterling silver is made from 92.5% pure silver, mixed with other metals like copper for strength and durability. This material is known for its inherent value, as it contains a higher silver content. It carries a hallmark to testify its genuine quality. On the other hand, silver-plated items are made from a base metal like copper or brass, coated with a thin layer of silver through electroplating. Although silver-plated items may initially look similar to sterling silver, the silver layer is much thinner and less valuable. Over time, the silver plating may wear off, revealing the base metal underneath. While sterling silver possesses long-lasting value, silver-plated items are more affordable alternatives, often used for decorative purposes rather than as heirloom-quality pieces.
