Yes, there are requirements to become a member of the American Academy of Optometry. To join as a Fellow, an individual must hold a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited institution. Additionally, they must have completed a post-graduate clinical residency or possess an advanced degree in a related field. Alternatively, applicants can demonstrate significant contributions to optometry through research, education, or clinical practice. As for Associate membership, individuals must hold a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree or an equivalent international degree while actively participating in the profession. Student memberships are available for optometry students enrolled in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. By meeting these requirements, one can become a member of the esteemed American Academy of Optometry.
