When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this North Dakota Department of Transportation (DMV/RMV) phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. My Experience Calling North Dakota Department of Transportation (DMV/RMV) at this Number

Aug 17, 2023

Calling the North Dakota Department of Transportation is a fairly straightforward experience, but the customer service experience might be a bit too simple. When I called, I was directed to the main menu, which explained what kind of questions the North Dakota DMV handled and what were left to another department. The state DMV does not handle licensing questions; it's responsible for titles and vehicle registrations, dealer regulations and other similar concerns.

Upon making my selection at the main menu, I was almost instantly connected to a customer service representative, and I informed her that I had just purchased a vehicle in North Dakota and needed to get it registered. She told me that to do that, I would need the title of my vehicle and my driver's license, and I'd have to take both to my local county offices. I asked if there was one available in every county, and she confirmed that there was.

I then asked if there was anything else I would need to bring with me, such as a bill of sale, and she confirmed that the title and license were all that were necessary. I then inquired about what kind of fees I could expect to pay, and she said that would differ based on the age and weight of my vehicle. However, regardless of the parameters of my vehicle, I could expect to pay a 5% excise tax, plus an additional $5 as part of my registration fees, in addition to any fees charged by the state. With no other questions, I thanked her for her time and ended the call.

Overall, I thought the call was fine, but the representative seemed to be a little short with me. While she provided all of the information I needed to answer my questions, she didn't sound very personal in her responses. The tone of her voice was more of "Let's get this over with," resulting in a rather short and brusque experience. She wouldn't go beyond the basics to give me information; it seemed more like she wanted to get me off the phone as quickly as possible.

I thought the rest of the overall experience was good; I was able to seamlessly navigate the menu and get assistance without much of a wait. But the short nature of the call and her attempts to seemingly hustle me through the process really made for a less-than-enjoyable experience. Based on my experience, this number is a good place to get information, but I'd probably opt to go to the website first rather than deal with the customer service that I received on this call.
