Calling Walmart's customer service has some usage, but its ability to find a Walmart near you is pretty limited unless you know the ZIP Code you want to search for a store.
When I called, I asked the system for the store locator, intending to ask for a Walmart location that had a deli where I'm currently located. The system told me that I could look up Walmart or Sam's Club locations and further divide them by requesting locations near a certain ZIP Code or by the location I was calling from.
I decided to ask for Walmart locations by the location of my phone, and the system took a second before telling me that my closest Walmart location was in Greenfield, Indiana. I normally live on Indianapolis' west side, not its east side, meaning that the system was telling me my nearest Walmart was located 40 minutes away from my normal home.
I actually live just five minutes from a Walmart, so this shocked me. I asked it for the next closest location three more times and got two more locations in Indianapolis and one in Fishers, none close to where I live nor where I happened to be calling from.
After that frustration, I asked to find a Walmart by zip code, and the system gave me a Honolulu Walmart that I had visited before. I asked it for its hours, but the system told me it could not reveal the hours because they would vary by store. My best bet would be to call the store itself and request its hours from that number.
I then returned to the main menu to get information about a deli near me, but a deli was not a search option presented. My only options were Walmart, Sam's Club, Neighborhood Market and a Walmart pharmacy. With that information, I ended the call, unable to get any more information.
Overall, I was not impressed with this number. Knowing your ZIP Code when traveling is helpful, but you'll be totally lost if you don't. The system seems to tie where you're calling from to your phone number, regardless of where you happen to be. That's a serious problem with people moving as much as they are; it makes this feature useless for many people who moved away from home.
Given the wildly inaccurate location feature, I would only use this feature if you genuinely knew where you were when asking for a store. The system cannot use your phone's location services if you're traveling and looking for a Walmart.
