What are the hours and when should I call?

AAA operates the call center for this 800-222-4357 phone number Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm ET. The short answer is that you should call on a Tuesday. This observation and the following section are based on analysis of a sample set of 1,321 calls made in the last 90 days using our free, web-based phone (see above).
An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this AAA phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like AAA staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.
The least busy time to call
The least busy day to call AAA is Wednesday. The most busy day to call is Thursday, which averages 31% more phone calls by comparison. Again, this is based on a sample of 1,321 calls made with our AI-powered, web-based phone in the last 90 days.

The shortest wait on hold
We measured the shortest hold times to be on Tuesday. The longest wait in the queue on average occurs on Thursday, which is 2416% longer than the minimum. As you can see, there is more fluctuation in hold time over the course of the week than there is in call volume.

The best time to call
In summation, the best day to call AAA is Tuesday. It isn't the least busy day, but the fact that hold times are shortest combined with it being on the busy side tells us that AAA staffs up on Tuesday to handle the higher call volume, and that makes it the best time to call.

My Experience Calling 800-222-4357

Jul 26, 2023

There are multiple ways to call AAA when you need roadside assistance. For AAA members, (800) AAA-HELP or (800) 222-4357 is the number you'll want to call in a pinch. For customers within the state of their membership, you can receive these services by calling the AAA Premier Services number listed on the back of your membership card. AAA-HELP is the phone number you'll want to use if you encounter an emergency outside your home state.

If you have an AAA customer service problem, you may wonder what it's like to call this number with your issues. Below, we've outlined what you can expect when calling AAA, from what types of problems can be best addressed to the speed and quality of service you can expect.

Types of Service Problems to Call For

AAA-HELP is the phone number for roadside and battery assistance, so the problems that will be best addressed are immediate needs with your vehicle, such as:

  • Dead battery that needs replacing
  • Locking your keys in your car
  • Assistance changing a flat tire
  • Towing needs, whether from an accident or a stalled car
  • Running out of gas
  • Stuck car

Most of these needs can be addressed relatively quickly by calling AAA. Once you give your current location and describe the nature of the problem, AAA will dispatch a third-party technician or tow truck to your location.

What to Expect When Calling AAA

When calling AAA, you may first notice that it can be difficult to speak with a human agent. Instead, we were greeted by a series of automated questions relating to our problem. For this reason, calls over problems such as membership, billing, insurance claims or other non-roadside inquiries may be difficult to solve quickly.

On the other hand, the automated system does make it easy to receive help with roadside assistance. For example, when calling to report being locked out of the car, it took just a couple of minutes to confirm our location and dispatch a technician to help us out. From there, an agent remained on the line with us, allowing us to chat about the service request, update details or cancel the service.

If you do want to be connected to an agent from the start, you can say so to the automated system, and you will be connected to an agent. From there, it was a relatively short wait to be connected, and these agents were able to assist with non-roadside concerns. The agents were helpful, and the service was quite quick, as you don't have to navigate through phone menus.

The Bottom Line

For a company as large as AAA, we were able to get our problems addressed very quickly. One downside is that you won't be able to talk immediately to a human for urgent issues, which could lead to stressful situations. On the other hand, for routine customer service problems, AAA provided a quick and hassle-free solution that got us back on the road within an hour.

More Ways to Contact AAA Customer Service

Email
Corresponding with a customer service department by email may not be your first choice, especially if your issue is urgent or time-sensitive. But email is a nearly ubiquitous form of communication, and AAA will reply our your email.
X (formerly Twitter)
@AAAAuto - Customer Service
AAA's Twitter page mainly used for company announcements
AAA, like many companies, provides customer service on the X platform (formerly Twitter). While it rarely entails live dialogue with a customer service rep, this channel can yield rapid response times and can be a useful option if you have an X/Twitter account.
Facebook / Messenger
Some customer service teams, like that of AAA, accept inquiries through Facebook Messenger. This is a good option if you have a Facebook account, and you may even be able to converse live with an agent this way.
AAA's website
As a last, sometimes only, resort- AAA customer service can be accessed through their website. This can entail digging through help articles before finding a form and "being allowed" to submit a problem to their team, and rarely leads to a real-time conversation, which is why GetHuman does not recommend this unless it's the only way.
