The issue in GetHuman1201372's own words
Turbo Tax did not properly calculate my exemptions. Both my husband and myself are in our seventies. Turbo tax used the $**** x * on line **. This amount was incorrect so I overrode that entry and put in $**,*** (which I later learned was the wrong amount). I ended up paying taxes of $****.** The IRS contacted me and told me I owed an additional amount of $***.**. They pointed out my math error. I went to the IRS website and found the calculations that I needed to get the correct exemptions number. That number turned out to be $**.***. I amended my tax return with this new exemption amount and line ** stated that I only owed $*** in taxes. The IRS told me that the exemption amount was correct, but explained it this way why I still owed them the additional tax amount. "The exemption amount, found on line ** of the ****, in the amount of $*****.** is correct. This amount is based on the primary and secondary taxpayer and any dependents claimed, found on line *d (*) on the first page of the ****. **The additional deduction amount for over ** years of age as indicated on **a affects the amount on line **. Because I filed a Schedule A, itemized deductions, the deduction amount that I am receiving is higher than it would be with the standard deduction plus the additional standard deduction amount." **Turbo Tax calculated that my tax owed came to $*** and said I was due a refund of $***.**. The IRS said I am not due any refund, but owe the additional amount. ** Can you explain this figuring to me? Turbo Tax Premier for ****.**I just discovered that Turbo Tax Premier calculated my tax return incorrectly. It added in the standard deduction and skewed the amount of taxes that I actually owe? What do I need to do to protest the extra taxes that I am now required to pay?
