The issue in GetHuman-nnekanwa's own words
I am a frequent Target shopper. I was shopping at the Target in Ocala, FL with my sister in law on August **, **** at approximately *:**-**pm and used the self check out. I usually do so because it is just more convenient.* I did not think anything unusual happened. Upon completing my transaction we walked toward the exit only to find our way blocked by a tall, middle aged man in a navy blue shirt with a Target logo on the left breast. He clearly wasn’t randomly searching everyone. He demanded our receipts (rather rudely) something that has never happened to me nor have I ever witnessed this in a Target store. I handed it to him and he told me that I had not paid for the Shark Professional iron in my cart. I was startled. I believed him and became immediately flustered and embarrassed because it became clear to me that he was obviously waiting there because he knew (as he insisted) that I hadn’t paid and he was attempting to catch me in the act of stealing it. I was mortified. I went back to the check out to pay with several employees now standing around staring at us. I was still confused because I distinctly remembered scanning the iron first but he said it was not on my receipt. *Anyway, we scanned it again and a question regarding whether I wanted the protection plan came on the screen and I paused because I also distinctly remembered answering that exact question less than five minutes previously. So I took the receipt, looked at the it line by line and lo and behold there was the iron for $**.**. I turned to the rude loss prevention man who was practically perched on my shoulder and said, “look the iron is right here”. He then just says “I was just asking. I never said you didn’t pay for it” and walked away. No apology, nothing. *I am so angry and confused. Was I (we) profiled because of race?? Did one of the many people who loiter and observe the self checkout signal that they thought I hadn’t paid? If so, why not ask me there? Isn’t it just as likely that it could be an honest mistake as an attempted theft? Does every Black person look like they could be a shoplifter? Do a lot of shoplifters carry $**** purses? I am genuinely confused and also enraged. I am enraged to the point that I do not ever want to set foot inside a Target again. And this one store, and huge corporation may not miss my individual contribution but alienate enough customers and you might.
