Re: Unacceptable behavior by Petco cashier “Sage” at the Petco store in Helena, MT, on October **, *****I am very grateful for Petco’s policy of having their employees wear masks during the pandemic. This has made me more comfortable to shop locally. I am a frequent customer of both the Helena, Montana Petco store and its grooming salon. I have always found the employees and groomers to be pleasant and professional. *About an hour ago (*:** p.m. MST), I stopped at Petco to purchase dog food. A pleasant-looking young woman was behind the checkout counter, and her mask was under her chin. I nicely said, “Honey, your mask has slipped down off your nose.” She replied, “That’s okay, it doesn’t matter.” I politely told her that it did matter to older people like myself with a compromised immune system and that we all can get the virus and be asymptomatic and pass it to others if we don’t wear masks properly. Then she told me that it was unavoidable when someone was “moving as fast and working as hard” as she was. Then, she became very defiant and started telling me that we shouldn’t get the “shot” because “they are shooting virus into us.” I hadn’t even mentioned the vaccine and just wanted to make my purchase and get out of there. She continued to rant about how “they are lying to us” and said, “how about if I just be an adult and live my life like I want to!” I calmly responded, “And how about if I write Petco corporate about this interaction with you.” (I have to say this ended on an amusing note: She said: “So, ma’am did you want to pay for this?”—I was so stunned by her rudeness and the misinformation, that I started to walk out without paying. I respond, “Actually, after this discussion, no, I really don’t want to pay, but sometimes you just have to do what is right.”—I did pay!)*Seriously, I have never been treated so poorly by an employee. This young woman, Sage, should not be allowed to work with the public. It is easy to order from Chewy and Amazon, plus we have PetSmart in Helena as well. I am committed to supporting local businesses during the pandemic, but I expect to be treated with respect and civility. Sage’s behavior is inexcusable and needs to be addressed. I am hopeful that you value your customers enough to do so.*Sincerely,**Deborah Massett***** Laurel Street*Helena, MT *********-***-****
