I made an appointment at the Phoenix Paul Mitchell school. I explained that I had a Groupon for basic color and that I wanted to add a roller set. The receptionist explained that the roller set would be an extra charge which I said was fine. I arrived at the school and spoke with the same receptionist. She remembered me and took my groupon code. I was greeted by the student*stylist and we went to her chair to have a consult. She then stated that she needed to “check” to see if she “had time for all of that” so we waited and an instructor came over. He stated that they could do the color but not the roller set because they didn’t have the time. I explained that I had confirmed my services twice and then I asked if I was using the right vernacular or if there was a better way to express what I wanted done to my hair. He said no, I had explained it perfectly but since the receptionist “wasn’t a hairdresser” she wasn’t able to estimate times and had given me wrong information. He also said that because they didn’t know what kind of hair I had or the length....it would be hard to give an estimate. I asked what I should do in that case and he stated that the only day that they could definitely do my hair with enough time would be Friday. This school is only open during the day, during my working hours. So this will not work. Furthermore, and most noticeably....I was the only person being turned away and I was the only black person there. I noticed another woman getting her hair set with rollers during my consultation. This interaction made me feel bad and I do not want to return. The inference was that my hair would somehow take longer than everyone else’s to care for. Therefore I would like a refund. I don’t want to spend my money in a place that seems to use code for “we didn’t know you were black”. I asked the instructor and receptionist together what my next steps should be as far as receiving a refund and they apologized and said to contact Groupon.
