I have been using my hotmail email address for all of my google accounts for years. Today, I simply tried to create a gmail account, but instead this new email address took over my Google account. As such, I have lost all of my contacts that were on my phone under the hotmail account. When I follow the steps on Google's help page to change or update the Google account, it does not allow me to change accounts. I can switch the recovery email to my hotmail and so on, but I cannot switch it back to my hotmail for my Google account. If I hadn't lost my contacts, I would not even care. Their help page is useless.
This has been extremely frustrating because every time I'd log into Chrome (I have stayed signed in since Day * with Hotmail, which is how I created my Google Account years ago), a dialogue box would open every time that shows my Hotmail address and then a blank box for a Gmail address. I thought this was where I was supposed to create this new Gmail account I wanted to create, not allow it to take control of my Google Account! There was no explanation page to explain the process or even a "Wait! Are you sure you want *****@***.com to be your Google Account email?" I feel duped or blindsided. Furthermore, once it becomes a Gmail account, you can't even change it back! And I spent * hours going through all of their options on the help page. Nothing worked. Furthermore, this affected every device I use Google as a sign in: Google Maps, YouTube, my phone contacts!! I lost half of my contacts yesterday!! I didn't even make this change from my phone! I did it on my Chromebook!
Google needs to allow me to have full control of my Google Account email preference. They also need to add an indicator on their Chrome home page that what they are asking for you to do when you type a new email address is not to create a new Gmail but to switch your Google Account to a different email. Then they need to let me switch back from the new Gmail to my previous Hotmail. There is no arrow to click to switch back to my old email address to take back over my Google Account. I need to talk to their support team!
I've had a Google Account for years! I use all Google products almost exclusively! I can't believe they have no support for this kind of issue!
I've tried EVERYTHING! I am very tech savvy. There is no help article out there that will fix it because they lock in Gmail to your Google Account and won't let you change it, even though it was never Gmail to start with!
