PC Magazine recently had an article entitled “Your GPS Devices May Stop Working on April *”. It is based on a statement that GPS uses ** bits to store the week and that it runs out on April *, ****.*Based on further reading *research: “This won’t affect the receiver’s ability to navigate and *or calculate precise time from the day level down to the microsecond level. But it well create week, month, and year timestamps that are wildly wrong, which could impact any systems and applications that rely on GPS data at that level.”*The original PC article mentions GPS patches to avoid this being a problem. “If your device isn’t patched, then it will revert to an earlier period of time and GPS positioning will most likely fail.” This last statement seems to be in conflict with the above paragraph.*A statement was also made that a GPS unit should be fine as long as it conforms to ICD-****IS-GPS-***.**I currently own four (*) Garmin units: * nuvi car units, an Oregon ***, and an Etrex Vista HCX.*Here is my unit history as I know it.*Nuvi ***W: Purchase date unknown* Serial number *VA****** Unit ID **********)*Nuvi ****: Purchase date unknown* Serial number ********* Unit ID **********)*Etrex Vista: Purchased December ***** Serial number **D****** Unit ID **********)*Oregon ***: Purchased November ***** Serial number *TE****** Unit ID **********)*According to your WebUpdater app, all four units have the latest software version.**I am concerned about what should be done, if anything, relative to this article for these units. Do all these units now conform to the ICD standard?**Gerald Oberlag (*****@***.com)
