Between *:** am - *:** am on this particular day, I entered a Family Dollar store here in Chicago (on **th Street & Paulina). I went to purchase quite a few items, therefore I decided to bring my own bag even though I'm a SNAP EBT card recipient and it's my understanding that SNAP users don't have to pay for bags after making a purchase. Anyway, after I completed my shopping I took my items up to the cashier for checkout. The woman behind the counter, not sure if she was a manager or what, but when I entered the store and said good morning, she already had an evil look on her face and said nothing, as if she didn't want to be there. Anyway to make a long story short, as she's ringing up my items, she asks if I need a bag. I told her in a very polite and courteous manner that I'd already brought a bag with me and wasn't sure if I needed another one. So in the meantime, she rings up my items and at the same time I'm in the process of trying to swipe my card and remember my pin number. All the while, she's starting to talk louder about whether or not I want a bag. So, as she's taking my items from the cart, instead of placing them in the bag I'd brought, she sets them next to the counter, out in the open. Now I'm totally confused because I thought sure she'd begin placing them in the bag like all the other cashiers do. So after she gives me the total, again she starts yelling about do I need a bag. Then I tell her I really don't think so, but I'm not sure but I probably will for my eggs. So after my card is swiped she gives me my receipt and says thank you, as my items are still sitting out in the open. Then I ask her if she will put my items in the bag. She says something to the fact of "you expect me to put them in the bag?" I was shocked that she would even ask me that!! I said "all the other cashiers do, and I've never had to put them in the bag myself." Then she says "well, I asked you whether or not you needed another bag and you didn't say anything, so yes, you have to put them in there yourself." At this point I was literally dumbfounded as to what was taking place. Not only was she extremely rude, discourteous but very uncooperative as well. I was speechless!! So then I started putting the items in the bag myself, and just started saying how much of a shame it is for the customer to have to bag their own items at Family Dollar. Then, out of nowhere, she starts laughing and making fun of me to the customer behind me, then ignores me and helps the other customer, like I'm the one in the wrong. So after I bag most of my items, there were a few things, including my carton of eggs that would not fit on top. So I did need an extra bag for those since I didn't want them to break. So then I very politely and calmly asked for a plastic bag for my eggs. She literally snaps and says "I asked you if you needed a bag and you said no, so now you want a bag? It's seven cents honey!" I said "hold on, SNAP customers do not have to pay for bags, this was my assumption, and besides I don't have any change on me, just my Link card." Then she rudely tells me "Well it's seven cents!" As this point I'm really about to blow my top. I asked her "Oh, so you mean I have to carry my eggs out the store in my hand because you're refusing to give me a bag?" Then she snaps "that's right, you don't pay the seven cents, then you don't get a bag!" OMG, I didn't know what to do at that point. I just grabbed my eggs and left the store, letting her know that I would definitely be complaining about this. I would really like this incident to be known and dealt with, because I'm not sure if she was the only one in the store at the time, but regardless to that...there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON AT ALL for any customer to be treated that way. In any store. I cried when I left the store, and on the train ride home. I want her reported and dealt with. There are tons of Family Dollar stores in Chicago, and that is one I will definitely NOT be shopping at any more. And yes, I will be writing the CEO and whoever else about this incident. And If I have to take it to the local news, I will do that
