Hello! My name is Jimmy Thompson, and I am currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan with the USAF. I am bringing back my **** Nissan Skyline GTR from Japan to California under the **-year import rule and I had a bit of an issue. With all of the stops that I am going to be making while in California to "try" and get the car California Legal, I have some doubt that I'll be able to even register the car in the state. But, I did run into a statement in the California DMV website that states, "If the vehicle was not originally manufactured to meet CARB and EPA emission requirements and DOT FMVSS, the vehicle cannot be registered in California, unless the owner of the vehicle qualifies for one of the following exemptions. The vehicle was Acquired while the owner was a resident of, or on active military duty in, another state or country where the vehicle was registered in their name for at least one year." I have lived in Japan since March of **** and I have owned the car since May of ****. Would I still have to get my car tested and change according to CARB requirements or do I still have to comply even if the car is ** years or older? I understand that I will still have to get the car through SMOG but CARB is currently is the most confusing and the biggest hurdle I'll have to get over before I get stationed in California in the next few months.
