I would like to avoid paying sales tax so that I don't have to recover it at the end of the year ... I filled out a tax exemption certificate request because in Maryland, companies working in the research and development field are exempt from paying sales taxes. The Amazon tax exemption forms asked for my *-digit tax number and I don't have one. In MD, the *-digit number is associated with charging others for sales tax. *Our Amazon Prime account is managed by my wife, Elizabeth Tobin, and my most recent order (today) is ***-*******-*******. When we buy from a variety of other vendors, we state that we are exempt from paying sales tax and there is no certificate or tax exempt number from the State. All other vendors honor this statement and we usually do not pay sales taxes. When we do, we file for a refund at the end of the year and this can be more expensive than the tax itself.**Can you tell me if my request for exemption has been approved?**Thanks*Greg**From the state of Maryland:*Under Section **-***(a) of the Tax-General Article, "research and development" means basic and applied research in the sciences and engineering and the design, development, and governmentally mandated pre-market testing of prototypes, products, and processes. Market research, research in the social sciences or psychology, and other non-technical activities, routine product testing, sales services, or technical and non-technical services are not included.**Purchases of tangible personal property for use or consumption in research and development are exempt. No special forms are required to claim the research and development exemption. If entitlement to exemption is not evident from the documents of sale, a vendor should obtain a certificate from the purchaser stating that the property will qualify.
Let me know how to be exempt from being billed for sales tax
