I shop every * weeks spending $***-*** per trip. My family is on a cash based, shoestring budget. These groceries have to sustain a family of * for * weeks. I pay cash every time. I’ve always had large bills ($** and $***) as it comes directly from the bank. I’ve never been denied or questioned regarding my payment. **On **** I extended the babysitter so that I could shop without the kids, hopefully in and out. I came to the Middletown Delaware location, after work and spend about **min shopping. Everything was going fine until it was time to pay. My total came to $***, and some odd change. I handed the cashier *-$*** bills ($***). She went to the back for some time. Came back and asked if I had any other bills. I did not. That $*** was my grocery budget for the next * weeks. She went to the back again, holding me and everyone else up even longer. She cAme back out, and very loudly asked what was on the bill. I’m assuming some ink or paint. A stain, small. I have no idea what it is. It came from the bank. She rolled her eyes and turned to go into the back with my money, again. She finally came back out and said her manager saiid she cannot take the money because the machine in the back is broken. They can’t take anything larger than $** bills. I asked to speak to that manager, the cashier said they were too busy in the back. I also asked the cashier if they could hold the cart and I could come back after work the next day and I would have smaller bills. This way I did not have to pay for extended childcare, we could just come pay for the cart and go. She said they cannot hold groceries. If I didn’t have the money right now, I would have to move along because I was holding people up. I was stunned and embarrassed and felt horrible for the people behind me. I had the money. I work very hard to feed my family and to be embarrassed that way after a long day at work was terrible. Unfortunately, I was so upset I didn’t get the cashiers name. I left I such a rush. **At this point, I am now paying an hour of extra childcare, I have no groceries, nothing for dinner. I decide to rush over to Walmart and spent $***, getting a third of what I had in my cart from Aldi. I paid with the same bills, the cashier marked it with a pen, I got my change and on I went. Now, I have to figure out how to make these groceries last * weeks, until we get paid again. I also had to pay my babysitter for * extra hours after I finally got home with the couple of bags from Walmart, she missed her ride and I had to make a special trip to take her home. **I am upset that I did not get the cashier, or manager on duty name. I’ve never had something like this happen to me, I never expected it from aldi. I love the products, the store and the employees! They are always working hard. I work hard as well, and spend almost all of my paycheck in that store. I still do not understand what the problem was. Especially if the Walmart checked the same bills with a pen and there was no issue. I was held up and embarrassed in front of a line of people who I felt were staring me down as if I purposely held up the line. This is not how your customers should be made to feel like! I had to pay an extra $** out of my pocket, to extend my sitter, because I was held up and had to go to another store to get groceries. These groceries will just barely last until next paycheck. When you are on a tight budget, as my family is, what may seem like a small inconvenience to some, to others, it’s*Food off the table. I would expect to be compensated for the the negligence and embarrassment I experienced, in the form of gift certificate.
