An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.
The least busy time to call
The least busy day to call Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) is Thursday. The most busy day to call is Monday. Again, this is based on a sample of 18 calls made with our AI-powered, web-based phone in the last 90 days.
The shortest wait on hold
We measured the shortest hold times to be on Friday. The longest wait in the queue on average occurs on Thursday.
The best time to call
In summation, the best day to call Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) is Thursday. This is not the day with the shortest wait on hold in the phone system, but we still recommend it for its ideal combination of low call volume and short hold times. Plus we believe that Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV/RMV) staffs the call center well on Thursday.
Once again, please put this information in perspective because this phone number has no phone menu or long waits. It generally gets picked up right away if calling during their opening hours. If there is any way, it will typically be very short.

My Experience Calling 573-751-4450

Aug 16, 2023

When calling the Missouri Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicles division, it's clear that the department would rather not have you call the main number, which appears to be for several reasons. When you do call, you are given the number for all four divisions of the Department of Revenue and their individual phone number should your call get disconnected.

The Driver's License department is set up to answer questions for Missouri residents above all else, as it asks callers to either provide their Missouri driver's license number or their Social Security number when calling. If you don't have or are unwilling to give either, the system warns you that you can only receive basic assistance without that information.

The DMV apparently gets a high volume of calls, as I was told that I was 96th in the queue and my estimated wait time was 64 minutes when I got through the automated system. There is an option to receive a callback, and the system warns you that if you do not answer the callback, you will lose your place in line.

However, the callback function didn't appear to work as intended. I opted for the callback at 12:15 p.m. CDT, and I was still waiting to get a call back at 1:45 p.m. CDT. This kind of wait time seems excessive as it is, and to have the callback not function the way it should makes for a rather frustrating experience. While Missouri does have two large population centers in St. Louis and Kansas City and thus doesn't need a phone-based system as badly as more rural states might, this still seems woefully inefficient.

On one hand, having several options available at the start of the call and providing a number for the customer to call back is a good way to get customers to the right spot. On the other, having to have customers wait this long to get information requires either a more robust phone system or a more efficient call answering service to get help faster. As it is, this phone system seems almost designed to push callers to the internet unless they're getting specific help based on their own individual situations.

Overall, I can't give a complete experience of calling the Missouri DMV, as I couldn't get through to speak with someone. If you're calling with a specific question related to your Missouri driver's license information, this might work for you, but if you're only in need of general assistance, I would not recommend using this phone number.
