My Experience Calling 850-617-2000

Aug 28, 2023

Calling the Florida Division of Motor Vehicles' customer service number is a situation of hoping to call at the right time of day. First, this number is meant to be used for either driver's license questions or title and registration questions, so a long wait time is highly probable.

Second, the Florida DMV's phone system doesn't have any kind of hold system or ability for you to get a call back. It also lacks any kind of information that you could acquire over the phone. Instead, when you call, you're either connected to the system or faced with a busy signal. If you attempt to call back immediately, you're sent to a message that tells you all representatives are busy assisting other customers and that your call cannot be accepted at this time.

The system then tells you that you can visit the Florida DMV's website for assistance and provides the address before hanging up. There's no other information provided and no way for you to get assistance by holding for a representative or requesting a call back when a representative is free. If you call at a time when the system is overloaded, you are simply out of luck. I tried on two occasions, two hours apart. Each time, I was told that nobody was available to assist me and I needed to try my call again another time.

Overall, I thought this wasn't a good experience and wasn't helpful for the average consumer. I understand that the system can only do so much and Florida is a big state both in terms of geography and population, but that only makes it more questionable as to why the DMV doesn't offer any kind of information from its call center that could help cut down on wait times.

If the system can't accept new callers, it should at least provide some information to commonly asked questions so callers can get some help with their concerns. Florida has rural areas, and many of these people don't have access to a reliable form of internet in their homes. Calling in is often the only way for residents to get information, but the Florida DMV has made that more difficult instead of making it easier.

Given that a caller apparently needs to be one of the first callers of the day to get assistance, I would not use this number to try to get help from the Florida DMV. If you don't have access to the internet, your best bet is to show up in person, as it's unlikely that you'll be connected to anyone over the phone who can provide helpful information.
