What are the hours and when should I call?

Aetna operates the call center for this 800-872-3862 phone number Mon-Fri 8am-6pm. The short answer is that you should call on a Friday. This observation and the following section are based on analysis of a sample set of 143 calls made in the last 90 days using our free, web-based phone (see above).
An important note: busy times vs hold times vs best time to call
When we refer to busy or less busy times, we are talking about the volume of calls. The busiest times are when the most people are calling this Aetna phone number (least busy times have fewer people calling). This high call volume does not necessarily mean that you will have a long hold time when you call. Companies like Aetna staff their call centers differently based on the time of day and day of the week, so you may experience a shorter wait on hold at the busiest of times. When we refer to the best time to call, we are referring to the optimal combination of lower call volume and shorter wait times.
The least busy time to call
The least busy day to call Aetna is Friday. The most busy day to call is Tuesday, which averages 42% more phone calls by comparison. Again, this is based on a sample of 143 calls made with our AI-powered, web-based phone in the last 90 days.

The shortest wait on hold
We measured the shortest hold times to be on Wednesday. The longest wait in the queue on average occurs on Monday.
The best time to call
In summation, the best day to call Aetna is Friday. This is not the day with the shortest wait on hold in the phone system, but we still recommend it for its ideal combination of low call volume and short hold times. Plus we believe that Aetna staffs the call center well on Friday.

My Experience Calling 800-872-3862

Mar 18, 2024

As an Aetna dental plan holder, I wanted to find out if a certain dental procedure would be covered and how much of my procedure would be paid. It made the most sense to just call and ask a client, but the system sure made it hard to do so. I found this number online and it led me to the corporate offices, but then it kept circling back around. It didn't take long for me to be confused about whether they could help me or not, but I stuck with it and eventually, I got to an associate.

From what I could gather, this was supposed to be a corporate call line, but they were able to reroute me to an actual customer service agent even though it said several times that they couldn't. My guess is that this line is meant to deal with corporate issues, but it's also able to reroute calls despite advising otherwise. While that part was confusing, Aetna probably has a high call volume on a daily basis dealing with contract issues, medical providers, billing, etc so it makes sense they would try to offload customers to a dedicated line without a separate switchboard when they can.

When I first called this number, an automated assistant stated, "Thank you for calling Aetna’s corporate headquarters. If you are a healthcare professional, press or say 1. In order to get you to the area to best meet your needs, please listen to and choose from the following three options. If you know the name or number of the person you are trying to call, press 1. If you are currently an Aetna Medical or dental member, please press 2. All other callers, please press 3."

I needed help with my dental plan, so I chose option 2 and then it said, "If you are a member needing assistance with your plan, please hang up and call the number on your member’s service plan. Please note, if you are calling about a medical or dental plan the corporate line will not help you." This is where it got confusing because immediately after saying that, it asked me if I was calling about my medical plan or my dental plan. I went ahead and said dental and it asked for my birthday and my ID number.

At this point, I wasn't sure if it was going to work or not due to the disclaimer, but it routed me to a customer service agent who helped me with my plan. I did have to wait about ten minutes, but it worked out i the end. However, I probably would just call from the number on my card next time to save myself the extra trouble.

More Ways to Contact Aetna Customer Service

There are of course other ways to contact Aetna customer service besides the phone. Below we list the best ones, by medium.
Live Chat
https://www.aetna.com/about-us/contact-aetna.html - Customer Service
Login to begin chat or "Ask Ann" the virtual assistant
If phone-based customer service is not available, or the wait times are long, many people prefer chat as a next-best option. Some even prefer it to calling on the phone. Luckily, Aetna provides this option.
X (formerly Twitter)
@AetnaHelp - Customer Service
Customer service Twitter feed
Aetna, like many companies, provides customer service on the X platform (formerly Twitter). While it rarely entails live dialogue with a customer service rep, this channel can yield rapid response times and can be a useful option if you have an X/Twitter account.
Aetna's website
As a last, sometimes only, resort- Aetna customer service can be accessed through their website. This can entail digging through help articles before finding a form and "being allowed" to submit a problem to their team, and rarely leads to a real-time conversation, which is why GetHuman does not recommend this unless it's the only way.
