Since we're on a streak of recalls, we figured we'd pass this newest one on to our readers, as it's one of the largest food recalls in history.
Cargill, Inc. is recalling 36 million pounds of ground turkey because it might contain salmonella. The turkey in question is from the Arkansas plant, and the contamination could have happened anywhere from February 20 to August 2. That's a big chunk of time. The salmonella outbreak has killed one person and has made at least 75 others sick.
Cargill, Inc. wants customers to return any and all opened or unopened containers of ground turkey for a full refund. The recall covers both frozen and fresh ground turkey, so if there's any question about whether or not your turkey came from the contaminated plant, just send it back. Salmonella is not something to mess around with. While it typically doesn't kill people, it makes you very sick for up to 3 days.
Cargill, Inc. is advising all elderly and infants to take precaution as they are more prone to severe effects of salmonella. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service is advising consumers to cook the turkey to 165 degrees Fahrenheit just to be safe, but as always if consumers have any questions at all, make sure to contact
Cargill, Inc. (our handy dandy hyperlink will take you right to the number and email links).
