CampusBookRentals.com is an online book rental service for college students. The company serves more than 5,600 schools and allows students to forgo paying exorbitant costs for purchasing textbooks by allowing them to rent textbooks for a specified period of time, as well as providing free shipping to and from each location. The company prides itself on not only providing a wide variety of text books to college students, but it is also focusing on providing solid customer service to a sector that doesn't currently have it. What a novel concept (sorry, we couldn't resist). According to the CEO, Alan Martin, he started the company because he wasn't happy with the college textbook industry and lack of service. He has a good point there as most college kids are subjected to whatever prices college book stores decide for textbooks, and while used textbooks can show up in the offering, students still pay extremely high prices for books they'll only use for a semester and won't open again once that class is completed. Well now not only can you rent books for much less and for much shorter periods of time, you can get free shipping to help return the books to the company.
It's a great idea. When I was in undergrad as well as graduate school, the semi annual buying of the textbooks was akin to being dragged through hot coals while someone took a lot of money out of your pockets. Students often compared receipts from the bookstore to see who got dinged the most for their books for the semester, and even the most thrifty students couldn't find cheaper alternatives. And let's not kid ourselves, employees of the bookstore weren't exactly chomping at the bit to offer you a deal on the price of the books. Well in steps

Not only is the company redifining how a clearly established business works, but they are tweaking the model to include quality customer service in a business that never really had it. We have to stand and applaud the effort.
