JC Penney: Customer Service Is The New Pink

It's not often that you come across a retailer that truly cares about public perception as well as customer service. Apple famously transformed the way we not only find products (the iPad), but also how we purchase products (the Apple Store). In doing so, Apple was able to help customers find what they are looking for, but also provided a face to face interaction that left many customers informed and impressed. In an age where everyone uses the internet to find the lowest priced products and often times have those items shipped to them for free, in store customer service has fallen by the wayside. Well JCPenney CEO Ron Johnson is going old school and is turning his company's sites back on good old fashioned face to face customer service. Johnson famously advised Apple CEO Steve Jobs to include the Genius Bar in his stores so customers could get hands on help from true Apple experts, and he's now taking his own advice. Customers who shop at JCPenney will now find more informed customer service representatives in all of its stores because CEO Johnson realizes that informed shoppers want to talk to informed customer service representatives. Sound familiar GetHuman users? In an age when consumers are armed with more ways than ever to search the internet for the best deal, JCPenney is doing everything it can to keep it's employees informed about its products and services. JCPenney wants customers to have as positive an experience as possible, and the way to do that, according to the CEO, is with actual face to face interaction. Imagine that.

It'd be too large of a reach to ask all companies that choose to ship their customer service jobs overseas to follow suit, but imagine what the world would be like if that happened? The encouraging take away from all of this is, with Apple's stock hitting an all time high, with thousands of companies reading the Steve Jobs biography and getting the inside scoop on what made his company so successful, one can only hope that more companies, at least in the retail space, will start following suit. It may take some time, but large companies are always concerned about one thing and one thing only, profits. Well if more companies keep switching to the Apple/JCPenney model of bringing back great face to face customer service while taking their stocks to all time highs, that simply can't be ignored as an anomaly anymore. That's a full on consumer lead trend.
