<title>Capital One: Buying HSBC's US Credit Card Arm</title>

<description><![CDATA[We wrote in this space last week about how HSBC is scaling back it's operations in the US.  The company sold 195 branch offices in upstate New York to First Niagra Corp., and today it has announced that is has sold it's US credit card arm to <a href="/Capital_One-customer-service_160.html">Capital One</a>.  For the cool price of $2.6 billion, it could have been yours people.  <a href="/Capital_One-customer-service_160.html">Capital One</a> is also shutting down businesses in Russia and Poland, as well as selling a couple of european insurance companies that it owns.  You have to hand it to them, when they want out, they get out.  Through the sales and closings, HSBC is expecting to eliminate 30,000 jobs worldwide.  That's not what we like to hear.

So why buy if you are <a href="/Capital_One-customer-service_160.html">Capital One</a>?  Well on the one hand, they get $30 billion in receivables from HSBC meaning that if you had an account with HSBC, you will now be paying your bills to <a href="/Capital_One-customer-service_160.html">Capital One</a>.  They will be collecting the interest and principal payments as well, but this could be good news for those of you being switched over to <a href="/Capital_One-customer-service_160.html">Capital One</a>.  <a href="/Capital_One-customer-service_160.html">Capital One</a> has always tested well in customer service surveys, while HSBC has not.  Hopefully the transition will be seamless and customers who are being migrated to the new company will experience better customer service going forward.  The move is also part of a bigger plan by <a href="/Capital_One-customer-service_160.html">Capital One</a> to expand it's business and grow it's assets, as this move goes right in line with their announcement in June that they are buying ING Direct.  Only time will tell what happens, but this may actually be a merger where the synergies created from the acquisition could result in better customer service.  We shall see.
