Capital One rating from customer: 2.0 out of 5: Poor. Comments from customer: I sent a letter to see if they would settle for a lessor amount than owed. I have paid over $1,245.50 on a balance that began as $493.11. With all the late fees and over the limit (which they put me over the limit) have cost me way too much money. I was asking for a pay off amount to get a loan and get rid of Capital One -- They suck! This is the biggest rip off credit card there is out there!! I received a letter telling me to call to discuss my request. I called and the representative was not able to help me with anything!! They lie, cheat, steal and will not work with you at all. They are totally against their customers and try to get as many over the limit charges and late charges as they can -- they don't care what they have to do to get it. I have been paying for over 2 years and have not used this card since March 2008. I will never get it paid off with they fees added on. I quit paying them and do not plan to pay them until they contact me with a pay off amount.

So, I went to my credit union to get a copy of my $82.00 check to prove that I had paid the correct amount, and my credit union tells me that Capital One destroyed my original check and created their own for $52.00. So, MY CREDIT UNION THAT I WROTE MY CHECK ON HAS TO GET A COPY OF THE CHECK CAPITAL ONE WROTE. Is Capital One so hard up they have to do this to collect late fees??????????????????
There is something very wrong with this process.

Capital One tip: I made an online payment and due to a page load error, the choice of banks defaulted to the top one in the list. I didn't notice it, focusing instead on recording my confirmation number. It was a bank account I used for a one-time payment and did not carry a balance in, so naturally I got an NSF. The folks at Capital One Direct Banking were happy to give me a courtesy refund, but the credit card side are absolute morons. I keep sending letters to Salt Lake and I keep getting back a form letter that has nothing to do with my problem. Even writing to the VP of Personal Banking in Richmond, VA got the same pat response. My next step is to pay off the card, then make an accord and satisfaction payment toward the disputed amount and see if they notice the memo on the check. (See UCC 3-311(c) )

Capital One tip: BEWARE - being a stellar customer doesn't matter to them!
They're charging a "membership fee" now, even though I've never been charged one before, and don't owe anything (I've paid it all off), and have never paid any balance late. Usually I pay in full, each month when ever I do charge anything. When I called them to discuss it and said I have all my records from the last 5 years to prove I haven't paid any "membership fee" all they did was insist that I have. I then asked a supervisor (I supposedly have her name and badge number - employee ID info) she said she would send me proof that I have paid a Membership Fee, and then hung up abruptly. If I don't pay the fee I will have to "Opt Out" meaning I can not have a credit line or card with them any longer - and that ends up putting a "hit" on my excellent credit score. So either way they get you!! The choices you have seem to end up being like extortion!

Capital One tip: I have NEVER had an account with Capital One and never will. In 2006 my name was illegally listed as an authorized user on a Capital One credit card issued to my real estate partner, who threatened them with a lawsuit and finally received a letter from a "Joel Amy" at Capital One Bank in Salt Lake City; it stated that my name had been removed, with no apologies no explanations. My own letters and calls to Capital One were completely ignored. Submitting Joel Amy's letter to Experian via certified mail did nothing - and further disputes have elicited no change. Is there a corporate connection between Capital One and Experian? Gender bias is alive and well - and legal action is the only way for a woman to get redress.
