I made an online payment and due to a page load error, the choice of banks defaulted to the top one in the list. I didn't notice it, focusing instead on recording my confirmation number. It was a bank account I used for a one-time payment and did not carry a balance in, so naturally I got an NSF. The folks at Capital One Direct Banking were happy to give me a courtesy refund, but the credit card side are absolute morons. I keep sending letters to Salt Lake and I keep getting back a form letter that has nothing to do with my problem. Even writing to the VP of Personal Banking in Richmond, VA got the same pat response. My next step is to pay off the card, then make an accord and satisfaction payment toward the disputed amount and see if they notice the memo on the check. (See UCC 3-311(c) )
