Bank of America: Hallelujah!

Cue Handel's "Messiah", release the doves and tell the fighter pilots to ready their fly-by. Bank of America has canceled it's proposed $5 monthly fee on it's debit cards. In direct response to the outrage from it's customers, the bank has decided to cancel the planned fee. We have to give credit where credit's due. We not only criticized the bank for the proposed move, but also encouraged consumers to use their voice and flex their muscle by going somewhere else with their money. Well pat yourselves on the back people because you got it done. According to a B of A representative, "We have listened to our customers very closely over the last few weeks and recognize their concern with our proposed debit usage fee, As a result, we are not currently charging the fee and will not be moving forward with any additional plans to do so.” Well done all around.

Bank of America: Charging For Debit Card Use...Wow

Heads up to all of our Bank of America users, if you have a debit card with the bank (which almost all of you do), the bank is going to start charging you $5 per month for use of the card. That's $60 per year, for doing exactly what you have been doing, but without any additional services provided to you by the banking giant. Bank of America representatives insist the move is necessary in order to make up for lost revenue due to tighter banking restrictions. That ever popular "Keep the Change" program that encourages you to use your debit card? That's not going to be free any longer.

It would be far too easy for me to go off on a diatribe about the banking sector, and how now is not the time to start charging customers for using the same existing product. Nope, not gonna do it. Instead let's talk about the positive. I'm a Bank of America customer myself, and there's one thing that we can do: change banks. That's right, you can take your money and go elsewhere. Why wouldn't you? It's not like the fraction of a percentage point in your savings account is actually accumulating much each year, and now with more added fees, there are plenty of other smaller banks that would be happy to take your money. Sure they may be fewer ATM's for some of the smaller banks, but a lot of smaller banks don't charge unnecessary fees, and often times, they will reimburse you for using out of network ATM's. While I'm not necessarily advocating leaving the banking boehemouth, I'm saying it may be time as consumers to flex our muscles, and at least begin the research and conversation it takes to find out what else is out there. While $60 may not seem like a lot of money to some, it can be viewed as the nail in the coffin for some of us, and it's times like these where we consumers need to step up and make the company feel it. Not happy with your revenue for your shareholders Bank of America? Well watch what happens when an empowered customer base takes their money and goes elsewhere. It's a lot harder to make loans when you don't have the money in the first place.

Bank of America: Eliminating 30,000 Jobs

Nothing about that headline is good. Whether it's the fact that the nation's largest bank is cutting 30,000 jobs, or if you take the view that national unemployment is about to go up, in the end, it's not good. While the CEO of Bank of America, Brian Moynihan, claims this is good for the company, it can't possibly be. To be honest, what else is he going to say? According to the CEO, the jobs that will be cut will come from "unfilled positions", as well as through attrition from the bank splitting it's consumer banking services from it's commercial banking services. While the splitting of the two businesses will certainly help in terms of receiving better, more focused customer service, whenever you see something called "unfilled positions" being eliminated, you can read that as "customer service jobs that we would have hired if we had more money."

The banking sector is a mess right now. First it was HSBC saying they are getting out of the North American banking business and thus eliminating those jobs, and now B of A saying they are going to cut 30,000 jobs, and it terrifies me to see what the other banks are doing. Granted, these are companies that dragged us all into this mess so we can't feel too bad for them, but like we always say, when times are tough, companies try to cut the fat. That fat, according to the higher ups, is usually sitting in customer service/call centers. For a company that gets mixed reviews from our users, we'll be really interested to see what happens to the quality of calls/complaints/customer queries. While the job cuts won't be done all at once and will be phased in over the next two years, hopefully the changes won't be noticeable for the banking giant. Hey, maybe this will mean they'll use some of that cool $5 billion they just got from Warren Buffet to ensure that customer service doesn't get too affected. One can only hope.

Bank of America: Opening New Mortgage Help Centers

Bank of America announced that it is going to triple the number of mortgage help centers that it currently has. The company aims to open as many as 40 centers around the country, specifically in sections of the country that are hard hit by foreclosures, including Detroit and California. Bank of America aims to provide help to some two million homes that are currently under foreclosure across the country. The company is doing so in response to the requests from the public, and those mortgage holders that prefer to speak to someone in person. It's still unclear whether the employees in the new mortgage centers will be able to ease the terms of the loans, or if they will merely act as advisers to the mortgagees, laying out various options to the mortgage holders.

Bank of America was criticized for it's role in the sub prime mortgage crisis, as it was said to have given out thousands of loans to customers that couldn't afford them. In that regard, it's great to see the company focusing on the clean up of the mess that it created. It's sort of like BP lauding the fact that they spent all the money on the oil spill clean up. Well, they wouldn't have to if the problem that they created didn't exist in the first place. If the bank properly advised customers before they took the loan out, maybe we wouldn't be in this mess. Regardless, from a customer service stand point, it's great to see the country's largest bank doing the right thing, and tripling it's efforts to offer help to those who need it. The company is clearly listening to the public, and is using the information gleaned from them to react, and do the right thing by offering to triple it's staff to help those who need it.

Bank of America changes overdraft fees for the benefit of customers

According to Bank of America, the bank will lower overdraft fees for its customers, starting October 19, 2009. While the fee itself will remain at $35 per overdraft, there will be no charge if the overdraft is by less than $10. Previously, this limit was set to $5. The bank will also stop charging if a consumer exceeds 4 overdrafts in a given day. Previously, this limit was 10 per day.

Bank of America claims that these changes come as a result of listening to customer feedback. It is clear that tough economic times are making more of their customers vulnerable to overdraft fees, and customers have been complaining about being hit hard by the fees.

Though the fees seem high and in some ways predatory towards those with little money in their accounts, gethuman still applauds the company for listening and responding to customer demand. Customers will still have the option to opt out of overdraft protection when signing up for a new account at the bank.

Read more about this from the Charlotte Observer
