Bank of America rating from customer: 2.0 out of 5: Poor. Comments from customer: I am a merchant who regularly takes checks as part of doing business. The nearest BOA office to my business is about 30 miles away, but I was taking checks written on them as a service to my customers. Not anymore, since I called the bank one day recently to see if a check I was holding would clear (asking if the funds were available). I was told by the customer service rep that they could no longer tell me that information. They could only tell me if the account in question was "open and active". Useless information when you are trying to get your money. I would have had to close up my business, drive 30 miles to the BOA branch, only to perhaps be told the check would NOT clear, then drive 30 miles back. This is the stupidest practice I've ever heard of and do not know of any other bank doing business this way. Needless to say, I no longer accept checks drawn on BOA.

Bank of America tip: A God send! BOA had messed up the taxes in our escrow account and informed us that our new payment would go up by almost $400.00 a month. I researched the situation and discovered their mistake. Our taxes had changed but only by an additional $50.00. Over a 2 day period, my wife and I collectively spent 4-5 hours being prompted around. When I did finally get someone in their escrow dept, they asked me to fax the info (into a black hole). We didn't get any response. My wife was at work still trying to make contact and Googled "talk to a human" and found your site. She got a live person in a matter of minutes who made all the changes on the spot and cut a check for $1000+ overage in our escrow. Best experience we ever had handling a major problem. I wonder how many people give up and get boned by BOA.

Bank of America tip: now I can't even cash my husbands paycheck despite having CDs over $28,000 and savings and checking accounts at this bank. I was told today that they no longer cash third party checks and that the check is not from Bank of America. No it was from M&T Bank and there is no M&T Bank located in Virginia Beach. It's a good thing there is not, because I'd transfer my money there in a heart beat. So Basically what I'm supposed to do is go to another bank, cash my check there and then bring CASH back to Bank of America as a deposit into my account. Pretty lame. So obviously I am now looking for a bank that will be happy to cash mine and my husbands paychecks and take my deposit.
I was told 3 times "it is subject to the bank manager's approval". Well I guess that bank manager doesn't want my business. I was told my husband would need to be there in order for them to cash his check.

According to Bank of America, the bank will lower overdraft fees for its customers, starting October 19, 2009. While the fee itself will remain at $35 per overdraft, there will be no charge if the overdraft is by less than $10. Previously, this limit was set to $5. The bank will also stop charging if a consumer exceeds 4 overdrafts in a given day. Previously, this limit was 10 per day.

Bank of America claims that these changes come as a result of listening to customer feedback. It is clear that tough economic times are making more of their customers vulnerable to overdraft fees, and customers have been complaining about being hit hard by the fees.

Though the fees seem high and in some ways predatory towards those with little money in their accounts, gethuman still applauds the company for listening and responding to customer demand. Customers will still have the option to opt out of overdraft protection when signing up for a new account at the bank.

Read more about this from the Charlotte Observer

A user wrote me with this story:

"I called [Bank of America's] toll free number for information about one of my accounts and was doing fine with the voice responses. I have two Siberian Huskies and one of them howled at just the wrong (right) time. The voice response came back and said 'Did you say loan?'"

This story cracked me up and really hit home. I've got a pretty active household... small children and a yellow lab who thinks he's running for watchdog of the year. Do these companies actually expect that when we make a phone call, we'll be perfectly quiet and call from a silent location? It drives me crazy that their voice response systems "recognize" background noise. At least give me the option to key in information. They aren't doing me any favors in "hearing" me if they can never understand me.

I also live in a very small town that apparently doesn't make the radar of most large companies. When they ask me for my address/city and I tell them, the system says "Did you say XYZ?" And I have to say "NO" and repeat the process over and over. Since they generally ask for a zip code, why do I have to speak my city anyway?

Now, I have enough trouble with these systems, but imagine for a moment being a person with an accent, or someone who stutters, or someone with a different speech impediment. I hope that these companies begin to recognize that they are alienating large groups by assuming that their technogy adds value, when in fact, as compared to ten years ago, it detracts value.

If they alienate those with accents, stutterers, those with speech impediments, mothers of small children, owners of siberian huskies and other animals that make noise, and anyone else who doesn't call from the "Cone of Silence," who will their customer base be?
