“WARNING... DO NOT PURCHASE AN AMEX GIFT CARD unless you want to pay a fee, AND have it devalued in monthly increments, if not used by a certain date!! The representative I purchased a gift card from totally mislead me on that very information, when I inquired before buying it - emphatically stating there would not be any loss in the value for as long as the card was needed &/or until it was used up. She even left out that there would be an additional charge if the card was lost or stolen. I didn't find that info out until I had gotten it, and read the fine print that was included with it (I don't like the idea of having a gift I give devalued no matter how long it takes my recipient to use it) I didn't mind paying the $2 service fee at the time of purchase (which is not supposed to be refundable)- but when I found out about the terms - I immediately called the number on the back of the gift card to cancel.
