Amazon.com: The Best In Customer Service, Again

Now is a great time of year in customer service. Several different companies post new studies about which companies have performed well in the customer service arena around the holiday season as well throughout the year. A new study by ForeSee Results that measured customer satisfaction of 40 different companies has announced that Amazon.com is once again the best company in terms of customer service and customer satisfaction. Amazon.com, already solid in it's customer service, owns Zappos which continually is at the top of customer satisfaction and customer service, so it's no real surprise the company was able to take the top spot. What's really interesting about the study is the falloff of Netflix. We've detailed some of the travails the company has faced this year, but the company fell way off in it's score in a study that it normally performs well in. One thing to keep an eye on in 2012 is what happens with the two companies in terms of customer satisfaction as they appear to be trending in opposite directions. Loyal customers are more likely to recommend good companies to one another, so one has to assume that just as easily as they can recommend good companies, customers will likely badmouth bad companies. That's good news for Amazon.com, and bad news for Netflix. It will be interesting to see what happens with Netflix this year with the advent of Redbox as well as Apple getting into the television download space. Netflix could be losing market share quickly, but one way to combat that drop off is to provide excellent customer service and regain the mojo the company once had.

It's an interesting study with more interesting results. Of note is that TigerDirect.com, Macy's, JC Penney, Dell, VistaPrint and Home Depot all saw upticks in terms of customer satisfaction. We say it all the time but it's worth repeating, in hard times, customers are more empowered than ever in terms of where they do their business. Good companies have to provide solid customer service as well as good products or those consumers will go elsewhere. While it's easy to take note of which companies are doing a bad job, it's also worth noting which companies do a good job and we look forward to seeing more results and more exciting changes in the customer service space as this year ends, and the new year begins.

If you want to see the full results of the study, click here and Happy New Year everyone!

According to the Temkin Group, Amazon.com ranked highest out of 143 companies in terms of overall customer experience. The Temkin group looked at customer's interactions online, on the phone, and in person for all of the companies, and determined that customers had the best experience with Amazon.com. Other companies in the top five included Kohl's, Costco, Lowe's and Sam's Club. What's interesting is that Apple, routinely ranked the highest for customer service, recieved a score of 60, compared to the 81 scored by Amazon.com. However, Apple still ranked higher than Dell, Acer and all other computer companies. To no one's surprise, and the rankings are consistent with the complaints that we hear a lot about here at GetHuman.com, the worst offenders were cellphone carriers, followed by health care providers, and then the cable companies. Not surpisingly, Comcast ranked second to last on the entire list.

But Gethuman has a haunch that it also has a lot to do with Amazon's willingness to bend over backwards for its customers, especially in the holiday season.

A recent Amazon.com shopper ordered iPod speakers for their sister's Christmas present, when he saw that they would not arrive in time for Christmas he called Amazon's customer service who "immediately offered to ship a new set overnight for free". Don't mistake this for a fluke. An Amazon customer service representative let Gethuman know that they are "prioritizing all shipments, even super saver ones, with an estimated delivery date of December 24 or sooner".

I just tried out Amazon.com's "Call me" feature from their website, which allows consumers to request, via the Internet, a call back from a customer service rep. The site claims the following:

- No waiting They'll connect you directly with a Customer Service Associate,
- No delays as long as you're logged into Amazon when you "Click to Call us", They'll know who you are; you won't have to answer a lengthy series of questions to verify your identity, you can get right down to business, and
- They're ready to answer your questions the Customer Service Associate who speaks to you will be immediately ready to focus on your questions.

My experience was: I didn't have to wait. My phone rang immediately and I was connected within a minute to a human. Since I was logged in, I didn't have to provide a lot of information; they knew who I was and quickly pulled up the information about my order. And the representative was ready to focus on my question.

I called several times to test this and got a representative with an accent several times. Their recorded message (before the human came on) was a bit verbose, but not too bad. Also, a few of the times that I called they were making upgrades to their system and couldn't help me at all. Hopefully that was just a bad day for them in that regard.

Overall, that's pretty good, when compared to our standards. I can really only knock them on two items: difficulty understanding the reps and verbosity. But I do commend their innovative use of technology. Of course it assumes that you're willing to log on via the Internet, but if you're willing to make that effort, seems like they are willing to respond.
