Apple: Possible iTunes Hack?

Call me a couple days late to the party on this one, but it just came across my sites. According to an article on CNET, iTunes customers have been dealing with problems with hackers. According to iTunes users, over the past year, user's iTunes accounts have been accessed without their permission, often times resulting in the loss of account credits, or unauthorized charges to their account when there are Paypal accounts linked to the iTunes accounts. Apple has remained quiet about the issue as it assesses the situation, and a more official announcement is expected soon. This seems to be the route that Apple takes when there is an issue. The company does not officially acknowledge there is an issue until it has had time to assess the situation, much like it did when the iPhone 4 was experiencing problems with the antenna.

As always, concerned users should call Apple immediately is they are concerned their account has been compromised, but there are other several steps that one can do to ensure their account is safe in the future. As in any case when there is the possibility of a hacked account, users should immediately change their password, and to change it to something that cannot be easily recognized. Specifically in the case of iTunes, each user account has to authorize a certain computer to use the machine. One can de-authorize their account and reset it up under a different username and password. That being said, it's something to keep an eye on and we lean heavily towards calling the company and talking to an account executive for peace of mind. As always use one of our GetHuman numbers to get you in touch with a person. If you would like to read more about the potential issue at Apple, click here.

Microsoft: Only Time Will Tell

File this away as mildly interesting. Yesterday Microsoft acquired a company called 24/7 (formerly 24/7 Customer), a company that uses a complex set of statistics and analytics to figure out what customers want in order to better serve them. The company plans to merge the 24/7 technology with many of its services (Windows Phone, Bing to name a few) with the end result being customers being able to contact a company over their mobile devices as well as their tv's and of course over the phone. The thought process behind the technology is, through analyzing how customers and customer service representatives interact, customer service reps will better be able to serve it's customers, causing them to have fewer problems, resulting in less calls as time goes by. The move is essentially putting customer service on a cloud server, allowing customers to more easily access their information or have their questions answered without making a phone call as they will be able to use other platforms to have their issues resolved. For example, Microsoft and 24/7 are working with United Airlines to allow customers whose flights have been delayed or cancelled to change their flight/car rental/hotel, in one transaction, thus eliminating a phone call to do so.

This all seems like a great idea, but we are skeptical until we see it working. Many of us often have questions that cannot be answered in a frequently asked questions section, or from a canned computer response. Most of the time, customers want the security and reassurance of talking to an actual person and they don't want to have to find the answer on a website, on a cloud or whatever other means deemed useful by some of these large companies like Microsoft. That being said, if Microsoft can actually make this process as simple and seamless as they claim they can, then that's a whole other story. However something about this just doesn't sit right with us. It feels a little too familiar to when the automated phone service was first introduced. The companies that created these IVR systems claimed there would be less time on hold as more information would be available to customers in these automated menus. The result was more frustrated customers who merely wanted to speak to an actual human. Somehow giving the customer more technology seems like it's swimming against the current. But hey, maybe we will all look back at this and think it was a banner moment in customer service history, changing the way that business has been done for years. It's just somehow it all feels a little too familiar to several years ago. Only time will tell.

Zappos: The Latest Hacking Victim

This isn't good. Zappos, one of the best companies in the world in terms of customer service has been hacked. The company announced that a hacker has stolen personal information of up to 24 million customers. While the good news is that credit card information wasn't compromised, the hackers were able to take users names, addresses, email addresses and the last four digits of user's credit cards. The company is obviously aware of the issue and is strongly encouraging users to change their username and passwords on the company website. It's a shame that a company that is so strong in customer service is now the victim in the latest string of company hacks. As always, when users have their personal information compromised, it's best to take every precaution, even if you don't think it applies to you. Change your password on the site and monitor your credit card use. While the company claims that credit card information wasn't taken, it doesn't take much to watch your credit card statement and report any unknown charges to both Zappos and your credit card company as soon as you notice them. As always, in cases like these, you better heir on the side of caution, so contact the company using one of our GetHuman numbers to get in touch with the company for some piece of mind or help if it's required.
